Scope and duration

• A student residence permit is granted to foreign nationals studying at associate, bachelor's, master's or doctoral level.
• As a rule, the permit is based on the duration of studies; if the programme is shorter than one year, the permit cannot exceed the programme's duration.
• Re-enrolment and attendance are decisive for maintaining the permit.

Right to work

A student residence permit does not by itself give the right to work. Undergraduate students may work part-time after the first year of study and provided they obtain a work permit; for postgraduate students, the special provisions in the legislation are assessed file by file.

Good to know

• A student residence permit does not directly give the student's parents or other relatives a right of residence.
• After graduation, a one-time transfer to a short-term residence permit is available, provided the application is made within six months.
• The insurance obligation depends on whether general health insurance was requested within a certain period from the enrolment date.
