Marriage and Status Assessment

Your spouse is a Turkish citizen: your rights and your roadmap.

Marriage does not automatically give a foreign national any status; but it makes three separate doors markedly easier.

1 · Family residence permit

The foreign spouse of a Turkish citizen falls under the family residence permit. Provided the sponsoring spouse meets the income and insurance requirements, this permit — issuable for up to three years at a time — is a strong status in terms of education and everyday rights.

2 · Easier work permit

A work permit is obtained separately; marriage alone does not give the right to work. However, under the current evaluation criteria, for applications on behalf of foreign nationals married to a Turkish citizen for at least three years with the marital union continuing, the employment, financial adequacy and salary criteria are as a rule not applied — which makes finding an employer markedly easier.

3 · The citizenship route

Foreign nationals married to a Turkish citizen for at least three years whose marriage actually continues have the right to apply for citizenship. The application is assessed on living within the family union, not engaging in activities incompatible with the marital union, and national security/public order checks. The process runs through the Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs; the outcome is subject to the administration's assessment.

Frequently asked

  • Does my residence permit extend automatically when I marry? No; a transfer application to a family residence permit must be made.
  • What happens if I divorce? If you have stayed on a family residence permit for at least three years, there is a right to transfer to a short-term permit; the periods and conditions are checked for the specific file.
